Set within one of Africa’s most beautiful coastal reserves – Da Hoop – the Ocean House overlooks the continent’s largest whale nursery. It makes an instant impression. Even as you approach, you’ll glimpse the limestone cliffs, rock pools and white dunes that give the area its character, and before long you’ll be ticking off sightings of the 260 species of birds that make the reserve their home.

One of the loveliest aspects of a stay here is that the 4-bedroomed house will be all yours. With the flexibility to arrive and leave when you wish, you’ll shape your days in complete privacy. A dip in the pool or a butler-served cocktail on the terrace will be all the more enjoyable because your party will have the house to yourselves.

If you’re activity-minded, you’re in for a treat. You’ll be able to choose from marine walks led by your own guide, sand-boarding and mountain-biking amongst the dunes and cliffs. In all, there are over 36,000 hectares to explore on the reserve and over 50 kilometers of beautiful sandy beaches to make your own.

1. Whale-watching. Between mid-July and November, Southern Right whales migrate to the shallows water off the Overberg Coast to give birth. Catching sight of them couldn’t be simpler. Just open your bedroom curtains.
2. Sand-boarding. The coastal fynbos or dunes are perfect for sand-boarding. Complete beginner or past master, you’ll have everything laid on to guarantee a memorable day.
3. Wine-tasting. Thanks to the resident chefs, every meal is an occasion at the Ocean House – and many are taken al fresco. All that remains is for you to choose the accompanying vintages from the Ocean House’s well-stocked cellar.

Each of the spacious 4 double-suite-bedrooms has their own en-suite bathrooms and glass doors overlooking the ocean. The interiors take their influence from the reserve. With a design ethic drawn from the surrounding fynbos dunes, they include the highest-quality finishes and all the modern conveniences you could wish for. Accommodating up to 8 adults and 4 children, the Ocean House is truly family friendly.

There are enough electronic and traditional ways to keep children of every age amused, including TVs, games consoles, Wi-Fi-enabled PCs and DVDs, plus a range of contemporary and classic books.
