DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Wherever you are in the Hotel Le Pigonnet, a luxury secluded escape in central Aix-en-Provence, it’s easy to see why Cezanne loved the region.
The sun-baked Provençal landscape that was his favourite subject is a constant backdrop. The hotel has perfected ‘Made in Provence’ luxury. The service is friendly and flawless; the Mediterranean cuisine is full of local flavours; there’s an outdoor pool, hammam and sauna; and the ambience is closer to a home than a hotel.
All 44 rooms have been designed elegantly in ochre, turquoise and beige to reflect Provence’s natural palette, but it’s the Presidential Suite that steals the show. It has its own private terrace with views over the gardens and Mount Sainte-Victoire. Time to invest in an easel.
WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THE HOTEL
- Its history. The hotel has been cherished by the same family for the last 90 years. They’ve kept it young at heart while celebrating its heritage.
- Its garden. While it was one of Cezanne’s favourite spots to paint, you don’t need his sensibilities to enjoy its serenity. Lines of century-old chestnut trees stand guard over blooming, multi-coloured rosary arcades.
- Its cuisine. With views over the garden from its bright, spacious dining room, “La Table du Pigonnett” is the restaurant’s winter incarnation. Then life moves outside in the summer onto the shaded terrace for al fresco bistronomic dining.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
ROOMS & SUITES
Total number of rooms: 40
Total number of suites: 1 suite, 2 junior suites, 1 villa
Number of floors: 2
The Pigonnet’s 44 rooms and suites all blend character and comfort. It’s clear an expert eye has picked and presented the fabrics, furnishings and furniture in every space. There is fibre optic wifi, Nespresso machines and flat screen TVs with free on demand video throughout the hotel. It’s the room views that differ. While the Deluxe rooms look over the gardens, the Single Bastide, Classic and Superior rooms have views of the courtyard and swimming pool. Take a suite and you could end the day drinking cassis on your own private terrace watching the shadows creep down the garden and the sun fall behind the mountain.
